Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
