‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Light-based treatment is definitely experiencing a wave of attention. There are now available light-emitting tools designed to address dermatological concerns and fine lines as well as aching tissues and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device enhanced with miniature red light sources, promoted by the creators as “a significant discovery in at-home oral care.” Internationally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. Based on supporter testimonials, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, enhancing collagen production, soothing sore muscles, relieving inflammation and persistent medical issues and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.
The Science and Skepticism
“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes a Durham University professor, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Artificial sun lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Various Phototherapy Approaches
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. In serious clinical research, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue light sources, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, enhance blood flow, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – an important goal for anti-aging. “The evidence is there,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Nevertheless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Optimal treatment times are unknown, proper positioning requirements, the risk-benefit ratio. Many uncertainties remain.”
Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives
One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, bacteria linked to pimples. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”
Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects
Meanwhile, in advanced research areas, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, however two decades past, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he explains. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”
What it did have going for it, though, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” notes the researcher, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”
With 1070 treatment, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, explains the expert, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
