Substantial Internet Disruption Impacts Dozens Online Platforms and Applications
A large-scale web outage has affected dozens sites and mobile apps globally, with users noting problems getting online due to difficulties at the web hosting system.
The disrupted services encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-operated operations such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring home security firm.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of difficulties using the HMRC site on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users took to social media to complain their home gadgets were not working.
In the UK alone, reports of problems on particular applications reached the many thousands for each platform.
Officials confirmed that the issue originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a unit that offers essential online infrastructure for many companies, who lease resources on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global web hosting service.
Shortly after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “elevated failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect appeared to affect services globally, and the outage tracking website reporting outages with the corresponding services in multiple continents.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, also reported a rise in issues on Monday morning, including several cases located in Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the problems began.
